The Jennifer Summers Barrett Memorial Volunteers on the Run 5K is only 2 weeks away! This is a family friendly and pet friendly race is held at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis, Maryland. The 5K race is unique to the area, because it is one of few races that accommodates so many ages of participants, as well as dogs. While many of the runners are members of the Junior League of Annapolis, many area residents also come out to participate. The annual race offer prizes for  specific age groups, including children under 10.

Whether you are an experienced runner looking for an easy and fun race to complete with your family, or a novice runner looking to extend your mileage, this race is for you! Increasing your distance should be done slowly, not increasing more than 10% every week. There are many training programs available for those interested in running, but haven’t run more than a few minutes at a time, including the popular Couch-to-5K program. As you increase your stamina, look to runs like the 6K or 10-mile run as your next stepping stones. With time you may find yourself wanting to run a half or full marathon within a year!

There are many health benefits from running for adults and kids. As with adults, active kids are less likely to be obese and suffer from cardiovascular disease. They are also less likely to experiment with drugs or cigarettes and avoid friends that do not also participate in a healthy lifestyle. It is important to check with your children’s doctor before starting a running program.
