New Junior League President, Meg Samek-Smith, to Focus on Critical Community Needs (7/5/06)

Annapolis, M.D. – [July 5, 2006] – The Junior League of Annapolis, Inc. (JLA) recently elected Meg Samek-Smith to serve as the Annapolis League President for the 2006-2007 year.  Mrs. Samek-Smith joined the Junior League of Elizabeth-Plainfield, NJ in 1988. While she has held various leadership roles, of note was her initiation of a public awareness campaign for the Maryland Safe Haven Law providing a procedure for the safe surrender of an unwanted newborn.  Under her direction, both radio and television public service announcements were produced to inform the public of Safe Haven Laws.

At a recent Leadership Training seminar for the Junior League of Annapolis, Mrs. Samek-Smith challenged the volunteers to continue to assist those in need in Anne Arundel County.  Examples include the Junior League’s current projects in adolescent women’s detention centers, minority housing projects, foster children, domestic violence victims, mentoring pregnant teens and assisting in local schools where children are living in situations where they go hungry and are in a vicious cycle of poverty.  Mrs. Samek-Smith also spoke of the board’s plan to bring focus to other critical community needs through the initiation of at least two new partnerships.

Mrs. Samek-Smith is a graduate of Bucknell University with majors in International Relations and French. She holds an MBA in International Management from The Garvin School of International Management in Phoenix, Arizona.  She has lived and worked in many countries including Poland, Egypt and Spain and speaks several languages.  Her business experience has been as a Private Banker in New York City, a Marketing Manager for Sunbeam-Oster Household Products, an Entrepreneur creating a document management company in Poland and Egypt and as an International E-Commerce Client Manager for USinternetworking in Annapolis.

Mrs. Samek-Smith and her husband currently reside in Annapolis with their three young children.
