Empowering Women: Why You Should Join the Junior League of Annapolis

By JESS CICORIA

I moved to Maryland in 2020, just before the country went on lockdown for Covid-19. I didn’t know the area, and I didn’t  know anybody, either! As restrictions were lifted, I started searching for places to meet new people in my community. I knew I wanted to find a way to give back in Anne Arundel County, learn more about the surrounding area, and most importantly make friends. That is why I’m so glad I found the Junior League of Annapolis (JLA)!

JLA is like having a safety net made of strong, inspiring women who lift each other up. If you’re looking for a way to connect, grow, and make a difference, the Junior League of Annapolis might be the perfect fit for you, too. When you join a community organization, you’re not just signing up for events—you’re entering a space where you can connect with women who understand your journey. It’s empowering to be surrounded by those who celebrate your successes and support you through challenges.

From the Junior League national ODI (Organizational Development Training) I’m in the middle!

If you have ever thought about stepping into a leadership role, this is a great place to get your feet wet. JLA  offers fantastic opportunities for personal and professional development. From workshops that sharpen your skills to events that boost your confidence, you’ll find plenty of ways to grow. Plus, these experiences can be invaluable in your career! I’ve had the pleasure of serving on our Board of Directors, training in our marketing committee, and I am currently our webmaster.

Another rewarding aspect of joining the Junior League of Annapolis is the chance to give back. Imagine working on projects that address important issues in your community—like food insecurity, supplying period products to girls in need, and holding diaper drives. We love making a tangible impact, and your contributions can help shape a better future for those around you.

This year, we celebrated “Find the Good Day” at Vida Taco Bar

Lastly, when I mentioned friends, I meant it! In a recent poll, JLA-ers voted “making friends” as their top reason for signing up. Networking doesn’t have to be stuffy! Joining a group like JLA opens the door to meeting amazing women who share your interests. You’ll build friendships and connections that can lead to collaboration and new opportunities, both personally and professionally. Who knows? You might even find your next mentor or best friend!

So, are you ready to empower yourself and those around you? I encourage you to check out www.jlannapolis.org and see what the Junior League has to offer. Whether you’re looking to grow, give back, or simply connect, there’s a place for you in this amazing community. Let’s make a difference together!
