Cultivating Inclusion: Our Commitment to Cultural Awareness and Diversity

Since 1981, the Junior League Of Annapolis Inc (JLA) has been a cornerstone of community engagement in Anne Arundel County. JLA is dedicated to building stronger, more inclusive communities. One of our key priorities is to foster cultural awareness and diversity—a mission that not only enriches our work but strengthens the bonds within the communities we serve in Anne Arundel County.

Our county is home to a diverse population with many different cultures and ethnicities. It offers a tapestry of vibrant neighborhoods and communities, each with its own unique charm and character. Cultural awareness is more than acknowledging differences; it’s about appreciating and celebrating the unique perspectives, traditions, and experiences that each individual brings to the table. JLA embraces this concept, striving to build bridges across cultures. Whether through workshops, partnerships with diverse organizations, or programming that highlights underrepresented voices, JLA’s efforts underscore the belief that diversity makes us stronger.

Cultural awareness promotes empathy, expands understanding, and creates opportunities for dialogue. By engaging in conversations about traditions, values, and experiences, we become better equipped to lead with compassion and work collaboratively toward shared goals. These principles guide JLA as we seek to empower women and support communities of all backgrounds.

To celebrate this ongoing commitment, the Diversity Equity Inclusion & Belonging and Membership Experience Committees are thrilled to host a Cultural Potluck before our General Membership Meeting on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. We invite our members to come together and share dishes that reflect the incredible diversity of our collective heritage. Each plate represents more than just a meal—it’s a story, a piece of history, and a way to foster connections. Following the potluck we will have the opportunity to hear from Dr Zandra Rawlinson on “Taking a Kaleidoscope Approach to Leading Inclusively”.

Dr. Rawlinson currently serves as the Director of Employee Learning and Development at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.  She takes immense pride in establishing cultures of learning to embrace and value differing identities, thoughts, and intellect. She has a deep understanding of creative learning and management solutions to advance individual and organizational success. Dr. Rawlinson leads authentically and inspires others to bring their whole selves to any type of learning space. She utilizes a growth mindset to create learning communities where all members are accepted, appreciated, and included. We are excited to have this opportunity to learn with her.

Please join us in this celebration of culture, inclusion, and friendship. Let’s make January 29 a day to savor not just the flavors of the world, but the spirit of togetherness that makes us all stronger.
